BOGOR - Professor of IPB University Iriani Setyaningsih said microalgae provide various benefits for humans, including being able to produce raw materials for various products with high economic value and have sustainable prospects.This was stated in the presentation of the inauguration of permanent professors at IPB University at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at the IPB University campus, Dramaga, Bogor, Saturday (21/5).According to Iriani, the market transaction value for microalgae-based products in 2020 will reach US$ 1,547 million and is projected to double by 2028.Iriani explained that microalgae are chlorophyll algae that play a role in photosynthesis to produce organic materials that can be used for various human needs, including in the food industry, supplements, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and can be alternative bioenergy.Also Read: The Young Generation Must Be Proactive Against Digitization"Microalgae used for the food industry so far are Spirulina and Chlorella, which are recognized as food grade," he said.This lecturer at the Department of Aquatic Products Technology FPIK IPB explained the results of research on Spirulina Microalgae that had been made for food products, including noodles, biscuits, jelly drinks, cakes, yogurt, snack bars, spirulina lozenges, and so on."Some of these products have been patented with registered and published status.
