The case of a nurse from São Paulo who took capsules of a compound to lose weight, had fulminant hepatitis and died after rejecting a liver transplant, launched a new warning about formulas marketed with miraculous purposes.According to the family, Mara Abreu used a compound with 50 different herbs that promises to “dry the belly and lose weight”.The product called “50 slimming herbs” contains 60 capsules of 500 mg, costs R$ 9.23 and promises “weight loss without diet”.According to the label, it also fights localized fat, cellulite, stretch marks, cholesterol, diabetes and anxiety.According to the label, the capsules contain: avocado, green tea, leather hat, jambolan, mackerel, melissa, douradinha, sarsaparilla, herb de bugre, carobinha, senna, dandelion, fennel, lemon balm, seven sangrias, hibiscus, soursop, cascara sagrada fucus, passion fruit, espinheira santa, stone break, boldo do chile, jurubeba, angelica, ironwood, cashew, Asian centella, artichoke, white mallow, porangaba, canopy, juá, sucupira, purple ipe, jatobá, collagen, Spirulina, glucagonoma, red tea, valerian, bugroon, white tea, ciarella, eggplant, agar agar, garcinia, lemongrass and apple cider vinegar.Surgeon Liliana Ducatti Lopes, who attended to the nurse and reported the story on social media, says that cases like this are more common than you might think.According to her, the compound formula has several herbs known to be hepatotoxic, such as green tea and carqueja.“It is very well described in the literature, there are several reports and papers that show cases of fulminant hepatitis caused by the use of green tea”, said the doctor.Even though it is a natural compound, this type of formula can be dangerous for the body and cause several health problems. The mixture of some herbs can be toxic and the lack of control over what is inside the package is dangerous, since there is no certainty about the ingested amount of each of the ingredients. In the capsules with 30, 50 herbs, many substances have the same functions, and the liver and kidneys can end up being overloaded in the attempt to absorb the nutrients.Nutritionist Thaíz Brito, from Metrópoles, says that the formula consumed by the nurse contained senna, which is a laxative substance whose indiscriminate use can lead to dehydration, loss of nutrients, hydroelectrolytic imbalance and even heart problems.Another herb that is part of the composition of the product is green tea: the leaf is well known for its beneficial effects on health, but in excess it can cause problems.“Green tea alters the heart rate and should not be consumed by patients with kidney problems. It also has caffeine, which works as a stimulant and can trigger anxiety in people with a predisposition to the disease”, teaches the nutritionist.“According to the European food safety entity, the maximum dose of green tea is 800 mg per day”, details Thaíz.Another risk associated with the consumption of natural compounds such as the one ingested by the nurse is the production of excess gastric acid, which can attack the stomach mucosa, especially in individuals with gastritis or ulcers. The effect on the liver, which caused the nurse's organ failure, is due to an excessive load of unmetabolized catechin.Thaíz remembers that there is no magic to lose weight, and the process is as simple as a matter of mathematics: caloric intake needs to be below expenditure. There is no tea that causes weight loss if the patient is not on a proper diet.“The most it can do is have a thermogenic effect and contribute to reducing swelling as it has diuretic properties,” she says. When in doubt, the recommendation is to seek a doctor or nutritionist so that the specialist evaluates the particularities of each substance present in the formula and monitors the patient.According to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the brand “50 herbs slimming” is not registered as a medicine and has been banned in Brazil since 2020.“The product 50 ERVAS EMGRECEDOR cannot be classified as food, or even as a food supplement, as it contains ingredients that are not authorized for use in food.Among these components are the leather hat, mackerel, douradinha, parrilha parrilha, carobinha, senna, dandelion, ironwood, gotu kola. These plant species are authorized for use only in medicines, such as herbal medicines, and not in food supplements,” the agency said in a statement.Anvisa warns that the sale of clandestine products over the internet is considered a crime. The agency explains that unregistered products have no guarantee of safety and efficacy and may represent a high risk of harm and threat to people's health.“Be wary of products with miraculous promises, which promise easy weight loss or any other type of treatment, cure or disease prevention action.Every product with therapeutic action needs to be regulated by Anvisa as a medicine”, concludes the note.Have you read all the Health notes and reports
