TRIBUNJATENG.COM - The Student Creativity Program Team (PKM) Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed) Purwokerto conducted research on the metabolomics of Spirulina sp.to find its potential as a biomarker under alkalinity stress. The PKM team consisting of Haris Raditya Subandrio, Salsabila Rahmadina, Dea Mudrikah and Zeha Kirana was guided by one of the lecturers of the Unsoed Pharmacy Department, Dr.nat.techn.apt.Hendri Wasito, M.Sc.PKM Team Leader, Haris said that plant growth and productivity is influenced by several factors such as light, temperature, water, and pH.However, for most organisms, alkaline conditions with high pH levels are abiotic stresses, because they can cause changes in morphological, physiological, and biochemical levels.Stress is any condition of environmental change (abiotic and biotic) that may reduce or harm plant growth and development.Alkalinity stress conditions cause plants to experience growth disorders such as a decrease in the amount of chlorophyll and the occurrence of interveinal chlorosis or yellowish symptoms on young leaves which will inhibit plant growth.“However, intersect with that, spirulina has a different response that is able to live at alkaline pH.This response can cause spirulina to become the basis of potential as a biomarker agent for environmental stress. This condition is caused by microalgae that can tolerate abiotic stress factors and accumulate secondary metabolites. One strategy that is reliable enough to see the decrease in chlorophyll content experienced by plants is with metabolomics technology," he explained.
